It is a small, close-knit fishing community well away from the resort strips and the cities. Crime that affects visitors is rare, and the area does not have the hustling culture found on some of the busier north coast beaches.
Why Treasure Beach is different
Most of Jamaica’s reputation for crime comes from specific neighbourhoods in Kingston and Montego Bay — areas that have nothing to do with where tourists actually stay, and nothing to do with the south coast at all.
Treasure Beach has built its tourism slowly and locally. Many businesses are family-run, most visitors are repeat guests, and the community has a strong interest in keeping it the way it is. People will greet you on the road because that is normal here, not because they want something.
Sensible precautions
The same common sense you would use travelling anywhere applies:
- Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car or unattended on the beach
- Use the safe in your room — every bedroom at Butterfly Hill has one
- Take a torch if you are walking at night; roads here are unlit
- Agree taxi fares before setting off, or use a driver you know
- Swim with care — the south coast has no lifeguards and there can be a current
Is St Elizabeth safe?
St Elizabeth is a largely rural, agricultural parish and one of the quieter parts of Jamaica. Treasure Beach sits within it, on the coast.
Staying at a private villa
Butterfly Hill is gated, sits on its own two and a half acres, and has a groundskeeper on site daily. Guests routinely comment that having staff around made them feel looked after rather than watched.
