Jamaica uses 110 volts at 50 Hz, with US-style flat two-pin sockets (Type A and Type B).
By where you are travelling from
- United States and Canada — nothing needed. Your devices and plugs work as they are.
- United Kingdom and Ireland — you need a plug adapter. Check each device: most phone, laptop and camera chargers handle 100–240V automatically, so an adapter alone is enough.
- Europe — same as above. Adapter needed.
The part that catches people out
Look at the small print on your charger. If it says 100–240V, a simple plug adapter is all you need. If it says 220–240V only — common with hairdryers, straighteners, electric shavers and some travel kettles — you need a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Plugging a 220V-only appliance into 110V will not damage it, but it will run weakly or not at all.
Hair dryers are provided at the villa, so there is usually no need to bring one.
Power cuts
Brief outages are not unusual anywhere in rural Jamaica. Nothing dramatic, but it is worth keeping devices charged rather than running them flat.
