Most villas in Treasure Beach, ours included, are listed both on Airbnb or Booking.com and on their own website. The listing is usually identical. The price often is not.
We are not neutral here — we would rather you booked with us directly. But the honest version of this comparison includes the case for the platform too, because sometimes it is the better call.
What a platform fee actually costs
Platforms add a guest service fee, commonly in the region of 12–15% on top of the nightly rate. Owners also pay a separate host commission, which tends to get built into the price shown on the platform in the first place.
Add both together and the same villa, same dates, is frequently 15–25% cheaper booked direct — because you are removing the middle layer, not because the direct price is a discount.
What you give up booking direct
This is the part direct-booking advice usually skips. A platform gives you a payment system that holds funds until check-in, a review history tied to verified stays, and a dispute process if something goes wrong.
If you are booking somewhere you have never heard of, with no other way to check the owner is who they say they are, that protection has real value. We would not tell a first-time visitor to skip it.
When the platform is the safer choice
Booking somewhere with no independent website, no phone number, and no way to verify the property beyond the listing photos. First trip to an unfamiliar destination, where you have no other way to judge if a place is legitimate. Any situation where the dispute process matters more to you than the price difference.
What we would ask before booking direct
Is there a real website with a phone number that someone actually answers? Can you see guest reviews tied to verified stays, not just quotes the owner selected? Are the total costs — cleaning, tax, fees — laid out before you pay a deposit, not added afterward? Get the answers in writing, over email, before you send money.
Our own position
You would be emailing one of us directly, not a booking inbox, and there is no platform fee either way. If that does not feel like enough assurance for your first booking with us, that is a completely reasonable place to stop and book through a platform instead — we would rather you had a good trip than a cheaper one.
