The hard part of a family reunion is rarely the destination. It is getting a dozen people with different budgets, ages and calendars to agree on dates and a price. A single villa solves a lot of that, because everyone shares one address and one bill. Here is how we would plan one in Treasure Beach, and what to settle early.
We host groups at Butterfly Hill, a five-bedroom staffed villa above Billy’s Bay, so this reflects what we see, and it is honest about where a villa is not the answer.
Settle the dates and the headcount first
Dates are the bottleneck. Pick two or three windows, check them against the rate seasons on the rates page, and ask the group to commit to one before anyone books flights. The villa sleeps up to 10, with a three-night minimum, so a reunion of more than ten needs a second plan, whether that is a nearby second property or a day-visit arrangement.
Christmas and New Year are the highest-rate weeks and the first to book. If your group wants those dates, ask early. Most other times of year have more room.
Split the cost before you arrive
Money is where reunions go wrong, so agree the method up front. The simplest approach is one total split by household or by adult, with children’s shares decided in advance. Children aged two and under stay free.
Ask for one all-in figure that includes the rental, Jamaican room tax (included in our rate), and the staff gratuity of at least 15% of the rental total, which is paid at the end of the stay. Food is extra: the chef cooks breakfast and dinner and can pick up groceries, and we estimate US$35 to US$40 per adult per day and US$25 per child. A 50% deposit secures the booking, with the balance due 60 days before arrival. Our guide to what a trip to Jamaica actually costs covers flights, food and extras so nobody is surprised.
Feeding a mixed-age group
A private chef prepares breakfast and dinner at Butterfly Hill, which takes the daily negotiation out of mealtimes. Tell the host about dietary needs and picky eaters before arrival so the menus fit the group. For a change of scene, our guide to eating out in Treasure Beach lists the local spots.
Things to do when the group wants to split up
A reunion works best when people can drift between shared time and their own. Billy’s Bay is a five-minute walk from the villa. Boat trips to Floyd’s Pelican Bar and the Black River safari suit the adventurous, while the pool and rooftop patio suit everyone else. See things to do in Treasure Beach for more.
Who a villa reunion is not right for
If anyone in the group wants nightlife, shopping or an all-inclusive resort with kids’ clubs, Treasure Beach will disappoint them. It is a quiet fishing community, a long drive from the airport, and pets are not permitted. Our comparison of Treasure Beach, Negril and Montego Bay will help you decide honestly.
