Most honeymoons in Jamaica happen behind a resort wristband in Negril or Montego Bay. This is about the other option: the quiet south coast, a house of your own, and a small team who cook your breakfast and then leave you alone.
We host couples at Butterfly Hill in Billy’s Bay, and honeymooners are some of our favourite guests to have. Here is what a villa honeymoon in Treasure Beach actually looks like.
Why the south coast is different
Treasure Beach is not a resort strip. It is four fishing coves — Billy’s Bay, Frenchman’s Bay, Calabash Bay and Great Pedro Bay — strung along a stretch of coast that most visitors to Jamaica never reach.
There are no cruise ship crowds, no hawkers working the sand, no buffet. The Santa Cruz Mountains shelter this side of the island, so it stays drier and sunnier than the north coast for most of the year. What you get instead of nightlife is silence, a lot of stars, and the sound of the sea.
For a honeymoon that is the point. You are not here to be entertained. You are here to be left alone somewhere beautiful.
A villa instead of a resort
The obvious difference is privacy. At a resort you share a pool with three hundred people. At a villa, the pool is yours, the veranda is yours, and nobody knocks unless you have asked them to.
The less obvious difference is rhythm. There is no dinner sitting to make and no need to dress for anything. Breakfast happens when you come downstairs. If you want to spend an entire day in the water and eat at nine at night, that is simply what happens.
Butterfly Hill sits on two and a half private acres above the bay, with a sixteen-by-thirty-two-foot infinity pool, a rooftop patio with a hammock and palapa, and beach access at the end of the driveway. The nearest neighbour is not close enough to hear.
What "fully staffed" means on a honeymoon
This is the part couples are usually unsure about. Does having staff mean never being alone?
In practice, no. Our team — a chef, a housekeeper, a groundskeeper and a driver — work around you rather than through you. Breakfast and dinner are cooked fresh each day. The pool and gardens are kept without you noticing. The house is tidied while you are out.
Most honeymoon couples tell us the staff became part of the trip rather than a presence to work around. One couple, Laura and David, wrote afterwards that the boat trip we arranged to Black River and Pelican Bar was the part they still talk about.
If you would rather have a completely empty house on a particular evening, you say so, and it is empty.
Days worth planning
You do not need to fill a honeymoon with activity, but the south coast rewards the effort when you make it.
- Floyd’s Pelican Bar — a driftwood bar standing on stilts on a sandbar a mile out to sea, reachable only by boat. Go late afternoon and stay for the sunset. It is the single most photographed thing in this part of Jamaica for good reason.
- Black River safari — mangrove channels, egrets and crocodiles, about an hour east.
- YS Falls — seven waterfalls with pools, a rope swing and a zip line, inland from Black River.
- Lovers Leap — a 1,700-foot cliff with a lighthouse and a view down the whole coastline. The name is not subtle, but the view earns it.
- Appleton Estate — the rum distillery, a scenic drive up into the hills.
Our driver handles all of it, and our staff will book ahead so you are not negotiating at the roadside on your honeymoon.
When to come
Daytime temperatures sit between 80°F and 90°F for most of the year, cooling into the seventies at night. Because of the mountains, there is only about ten degrees between summer and winter here.
Hurricane season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November. In practice the south coast sees far less rain than the north, but if you want the most reliable weather, December through April is the safest window — and also the busiest and most expensive.
May, and late November into early December, tend to be the sweet spot: warm, quiet, and cheaper.
Getting here
Fly into Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay. It is roughly two and a half to three hours by road to Treasure Beach, through the interior and down the far side of the island. Norman Manley (KIN) in Kingston is an option but usually a longer, less scenic drive.
We arrange airport transfers with our own PPV-certified driver. After a long travel day it is worth it — the last stretch of road is dark and unlit, and arriving to someone who knows the way is a better start than a taxi negotiation at midnight.
One honest note about size
Butterfly Hill has five bedrooms and sleeps up to ten. For two people that is a great deal of house.
Some couples take it anyway, because having the whole property to themselves is the point. Others bring parents, siblings or a few close friends and turn the honeymoon into a small celebration — which works well here, since everyone gets their own room and bathroom, and the chef simply cooks for more.
If you are two people wanting two people’s worth of space, we would rather tell you that up front than have you arrive and find it echoing.
