Taking a family to Jamaica usually means booking three or four hotel rooms, eating every meal in a restaurant, and spending the week negotiating who is where. Renting a whole villa works differently, and for groups it is often cheaper as well as easier.
We host families at Butterfly Hill in Treasure Beach. Here is an honest look at how it works and who it suits.
The maths usually surprises people
A villa looks expensive next to a single hotel room. It stops looking expensive once you count how many rooms you would actually need.
Our rates run from $350 to $1,100 per night depending on season and party size — for the entire property, not per room. Split between eight or ten people that is frequently less than four hotel rooms in Negril or Montego Bay, and you get a pool, a kitchen and two and a half acres of garden that belong only to you.
The other saving is food. Our chef cooks breakfast and dinner daily. You pay for the groceries, not restaurant prices — we estimate roughly $35–$40 per adult per day and $25 per child, and the chef will do the shopping before you arrive if you send a list.
Room configuration for families
There are five bedrooms. Four are on the main floor and the fifth is a self-contained studio on the upper level, which works well for teenagers, grandparents, or a couple who want a bit of separation from everyone else.
Every bedroom has its own bathroom, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a safe and screened windows. Nobody is sharing a bathroom, which in our experience is the single thing that makes or breaks a multi-generational trip.
The villa sleeps up to ten comfortably.
What the pool and grounds mean with children
The pool is sixteen by thirty-two feet with an outdoor bar, and it is private — no strangers, no queue for a lounger, no pool bar closing time. The property is gated and sits on its own hilltop, so children are not wandering into a road.
The beach is at the end of our driveway, a couple of minutes on foot.
The rooftop patio has a hammock and a palapa for shade, which matters more than people expect when you have small children and a lot of afternoon sun.
Having a chef when you have kids
This is the part families tell us changed the trip.
Nobody cooks. Nobody washes up. Breakfast appears while you are still deciding whether to swim first. Dinner is ready at whatever time suits your youngest, not whatever time the restaurant seats you.
Our chef cooks Jamaican and international food and will happily make plainer things for children who are not feeling adventurous. If you would rather bring your own groceries, that is fine too.
Babysitting can be arranged on request, for an additional fee, if you want an evening to yourselves.
Things to do with a family nearby
- YS Falls — seven waterfalls with natural pools, a rope swing and a zip line. The best single family day out in the area.
- Black River safari — a boat through the mangroves with crocodiles and birdlife. Children tend to love it.
- Floyd’s Pelican Bar — a driftwood bar on stilts out at sea, reached by boat. Good for older children, and a genuinely memorable boat ride.
- Lovers Leap — a 1,700-foot cliff with a lighthouse and a very big view.
- Treasure Beach itself — the village centre is a seven-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk, with local shops, a bar and somewhere to eat.
Our driver is PPV certified and available for airport runs and day trips, which is easier than putting a whole family in taxis.
Practical details worth knowing
- Children aged two and under stay free.
- There is a washing machine, which matters on a long trip with children.
- Wi-Fi throughout, and a smart TV.
- Check-in is 2pm, check-out before noon.
- Staff gratuity is not included in the rental — budget around 15% of the rental total, paid on departure and shared among the team.
Who this does not suit
Two honest caveats.
Treasure Beach is quiet. There is no waterpark, no kids’ club, no entertainment programme. If your children need organised activity to be happy, an all-inclusive resort will serve them better than we will.
It is also remote. Montego Bay airport is roughly two and a half to three hours away by road. That is a long transfer at the end of a flight with small children, and worth planning around — an early flight rather than a late one makes a real difference.
