Short answer: Montego Bay if you want the shortest transfer and the widest choice of resorts. Negril for the famous beach and sunsets. Ocho Rios for waterfalls and cruise-day energy. Treasure Beach if you want none of that and would rather be somewhere that still feels like a village.

Montego Bay
Go if: your holiday is short, you have young children, or you want the least travel between landing and a sun lounger. The airport is fifteen to thirty minutes away, which matters more than people expect on a week-long trip.
It has the widest choice of accommodation on the island, from all-inclusives to boutique hotels, plus Doctor’s Cave Beach and the Hip Strip.
Skip if: you want quiet. It is Jamaica’s busiest tourist town, with a cruise port and the crowds that come with one.
Negril
Go if: the beach is the point. Seven Mile Beach is genuinely one of the Caribbean’s best — long, white and calm. Negril also has the island’s liveliest evening scene, and the West End cliffs at sunset are worth the trip on their own.
About an hour and a half from the airport.
Skip if: you want seclusion. Seven Mile Beach is busy, and busy comes with vendors. Some people find that part of the fun and others find it wearing — be honest with yourself about which you are.
Ocho Rios
Go if: you want waterfalls, river tubing and Dunn’s River Falls, with lush green scenery and plenty of organised excursions.
Skip if: crowds bother you, or rain does. It is a cruise port, so the town swells on ship days, and the north-east coast gets the most rainfall on the island.
Treasure Beach
Go if: you want the version of Jamaica that is not built for tourists. No resorts, no cruise terminal, nobody selling anything on the sand. It is a working fishing community across four quiet coves, and it is the driest, sunniest part of the island because the Santa Cruz Mountains shelter it.
Skip if: you want nightlife, shopping, powder-white sand or a short transfer. The sand here is darker and coarser, the sea has a real undertow with no lifeguards, and it is two and a half to three hours from the airport.
We would genuinely rather you went to Negril than came here expecting Negril and spent the week disappointed.
Which suits which traveller
- First trip to Jamaica, one week — Montego Bay or Negril. Easier, more choice, less driving.
- Young children — Montego Bay. Short transfer, calm beaches, resorts geared for it.
- Honeymoon — Negril for the beach and sunsets, Treasure Beach for privacy.
- Group or family taking a whole house — Treasure Beach. Villas here cost less than the equivalent on the north coast.
- Nightlife — Negril, clearly.
- Waterfalls and excursions — Ocho Rios.
- Second or third visit, wanting something different — Treasure Beach. This is who mostly finds us.

Can you combine two?
Yes, and plenty of people do. The usual pattern is a few nights on the north coast either side of a longer stay somewhere quieter.
What we would not do is try to see all four in a week. Jamaican roads are slower than the distances suggest — Montego Bay to Treasure Beach is three hours, Negril to Ocho Rios closer to four. Two bases in ten days is comfortable. Four in seven is a driving holiday.
